Migori Governor Ochilo Ayacko has blamed the difficulty in maintaining county roads on a lack of enough resources and delays in funding from the National Treasury.
The governor said they have limited funding, which streams from the national government in small bits that cannot have an impact on development.
According to the governor, the road levy should be released to the counties.
"Although it is said that county governments are unable to do roads, it is not our wish," the governor said.
Governor Ayacko said counties are being starved of funds by the national government, limiting their scope of activities.
He claimed Migori County alone has over 5, 033 kilometers of county roads.
"I am not giving an excuse for not giving you good roads but we will try as much as we can within the means and ability that we have," Governor Ayacko said.
He highlighted that they would require Sh10 billion to do all the county roads within Migori.
The governor said they had a budget of less than Sh8.4 billion that covered both recurrent and development expenditures which was not enough to maintain county roads.
Governor Ayacko stressed the need for counties receiving the roads levy, saying this would help in ensuring better roads in the counties.
